Feel of Steel

WELDING STARTS WITH YOUR MEASUREMENTS. TUBE BY TUBE — THAT'S WHAT WE CALL MEASURE MADE.

WE BELIEVE STEEL IS THE BEST MATERIAL THERE IS TO RIDE — AND SHINE.

Just like we believe the earth is round. We know everything about steel. It’s our savoir faire. We grew up with it. It’s in our blood. No, we don’t also make carbon frames. When it comes to aesthetics, nothing beats a hand-crafted steel bike: it’s stylish, it’s timeless and it’s pure. And when it comes to performance-comfort ratio, nothing can beat steel. Simply put, steel remains the best material to build a bike with. And the last generation of steel has made this truer than ever.

1. 'AIR'LIGHT

Jaegher frames are made of high-end Italian steel. The steel alloys of the newest generation are ultra-light. Jaegher works exclusively with the top of the range, Columbus Spirit and XCR tubes: thick and solid at the ends, thin and light in the middle. Jaegher works in close partnership with Columbus Italia. After visiting the factory in Milan and meeting their engineers we developed a tube set which makes the Interceptor Flymaster perform even better. This makes your Jaegher one of the best steel road bikes ever made – with a ride quality that is incomparable.

The weight of our frames rivals that of other materials. A Jaegher frame weighs between 1.2 and 1.6 kg. We have built complete road bikes with a weight of 6.7 kg, which is even too light for the allowed UCI minimum of 6.8 kg — and the Tour de France. But on the other hand. Isn’t that weight thing overrated? Maybe because it’s the only thing we can do in the bicycle shop. Just lift the bike to feel how light it is. It’s also the only thing we can compare. Grams.

But a lot of pro-riders are afraid of a road bike that is too light. Because after every climb there follows a descent. They don’t want – in the words of one of the best cyclists of the world – a road bike that feels like a dishcloth. A road bike needs to give you confidence on the hill, on the cobbles and when sprinting. And that is exactly what a Jaegher does.

Jaegher works exclusively with the top of the range, Columbus Spirit and XCR tubes. For our Interceptor Flymaster we developed together with Columbus our own tube set.

2. PERFECT FIT

Small, medium or large. All too often, this is your choice when you’re buying a new bike. Then you are fitted to the frame with a longer or shorter seatpost and stem. Obviously, mass manufacturers try to reduce their production costs, and they do this by limiting the number of moulds they need for the frame. At Jaegher we start with you. Our experts take your measurements, down to the last detail, and only then do they start building your frame, tube by tube. If you can’t come to us, go to your local expert for a bike fitting and send us your measurements. Welding a steel frame takes time and craftsmanship, but we wouldn’t do it any other way. Jaegher has stayed true to its steel roots in frame-building.

3. COMFORT ON THE ROAD

Steel is an extremely reactive and responsive material. A little experiment will show you. Compress a steel spring and it bounces back quickly. Now try an aluminium or carbon spring and you’ll see the difference. This allows a steel frame to absorb the “road buzz”, while it’s stiffness means that each pedal stroke is transferred into pure speed. This unrivalled comfort and road feel doesn’t just feel good, they also improve your performance. You’ll remain fresh and more alert for longer. The unique feel of steel is difficult to translate into statistics and numbers, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t real.

Kristof Allegaert, world's best long distance rider. Speed, trust and comfort, that's what you expect from a road bike.

4. GEOMETRY AND FIT

It’s not a secret. It’s all about trends and fashion in the cycle-industry. Extreme oversized tubes, funny curves, ridiculous contrasts between thin and thick what results in dangerous limits on the most crucial zones of a race-cycle. We don’t go there. We don’t want to hide our geometry by making a race-cycle like a seasonal dress. Of course there’s been a huge evolution in positioning on the cycle, the composition of the steel tubes and welding techniques. We are proud to show those classic and still most performant lines of a race-cycle.

5. STRENGHT FOR LIFE

It’s not a very well-kept secret that some materials lose their strength with time. This includes the resin holding the fibres together in a carbon frame when microscopic cracks form in the layers. Another problem with carbon is it’s fragile. When hit hard it breaks. Jaegher frames are made of high-end Columbus Spirit and XCr alloys and are – what else? – hard as steel. And they keep their strength for life.

6. SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

You won’t find any non-recyclable fibres in a Jaegher frame: simply the best and most honest steel. And if there is an accident don’t throw your Jaegher frame on the rubbish pile – we can repair it.

FROM STEEL TO GOLD.

A Jaegher road bike is pure craftsmanship. Every frame is welded or brazed in our atelier in Flanders. Only a few highly specialised welders can handle the ultra-light, thin-walled tubes from Columbus Italia.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ‘KINDA RIGHT’ AT JAEGHER.

At Jaegher we’re not tempted by mass production. Simply put, at Jaegher every single road bike fulfils the exact needs of its owner. Every tube of the frame is cut and mitred exactly according to your measurements and bike position. There is no such thing as ‘kinda right’ at Jaegher.

If you want to see, ride and even smell a Jaegher road bike before buying one, you’re welcome to visit us in our showroom in Ghent. Just send an e-mail to ateliers@jaegher.com for an appointment. You can also place your order online and we’ll deliver your frame at home.

Jaegher is all about choice. Your choice. You pick a frame and we can turn it into a track bike ready for the velodrome or a randonneur – complete with mudguards and a luggage carrier – for long-distance touring. What kind of tires do you want? 23, 25, 28mm, ...? Brakes? Classic rim or disc? Shifters? Classic mechanical or electronic? Or no shifters at all — Il y a des goûts et des couleurs — There’s just one thing we don’t build. We’ll never build a bike we don’t believe in.

For the final assembly, you choose from the finest brands. Groupsets from Campagnolo, Shimano or Sram. Wheels from Campagnolo, Miche or SWS. Saddles from Enve or Fizik. Stems, handlebars and seatposts from Deda or 3T. Nothing less will do to make a Jaegher perfect down to the last detail.
